George Brown Waterfront Campus |
|
The project is located on a prominent city-owned site in the East Bayfront-West Precinct at the edge of Lake Ontario. As one of Waterfront Toronto’s major initiatives, the public advocate and steward of the city’s waterfront revitalization, the project had to be designed in compliance with stringent urban design guidelines, inclusive of objectives for street level animation, mixed-uses, sustainable design and architectural excellence.
The vision to consolidate George Brown’s schools of Dental Health, Health and Wellness, Health Services Management and Nursing in a single, purpose-designed facility is consistent with the endorsed precinct plan. The program encompasses institutional, education and employment uses, as well as selected retail and community services. With a student enrolment of 3,500 students, 500 faculty, continuing education and clinical programs this new campus is an anchor in the overall revitalization of the waterfront and will be a catalyst for animating this evolving precinct of the city.
Vertical Integrated Academic Campus The overarching vision of the campus is to realize the IPE, defined by a flexible/adaptable environment where students from the different healthcare programs can learn with, from and about each other, the value of collaboration and its positive impact on quality of care. The physical manifestation of the concept is achieved through a transparent, vertically integrated campus that supports a multiplicity of learning, training and collegial experiences. The massing and orientation respond to the unique conditions of its natural and urban geography, and incorporates an appreciation for its rich and storied industrial and maritime heritage. The overall composition is grounded by a flexible academic loft bar building along the west side. On the south and east sides, the massing is defined by a highly transparent and animated podium element connecting intimately to the lake and the park. Above this, the articulated forms of the library and large lecture halls act as beacons and symbols of George Brown College at the waterfront. The high degree of transparency ensures an energetic symbol of student activity engaging the the lake and the park and further facilitates the penetration of light to the park. The emphasis on horizontality – form and expression - mitigates the vertical impact of the complex on the Lakefront site.

Forensics Services and Coroner's Complex |
|
In keeping with its commitment to community safety, the Government of Ontario is proposing a new Forensic Services and Coroner’s Complex to be located in Downsview (Wilson Avenue and Keele Street). The new, state-of-the-art facility would replace the current facilities located in downtown Toronto.
The new complex has been proposed to take up six acres of government-owned land in the Downsview area. It would provide the Centre of Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service with the facilities and technology they need to enhance their ability to continue to fulfill their role in keeping Ontario’s communities safe.
Construction has begun and is expected to be completed in 2012.
When completed, the new complex will significantly increase Ontario’s ability to meet the demands of modern forensic investigations and criminal prosecutions.
Moving this project forward supports the public inquiry report of Justice Stephen Goudge who recommended a new, modern facility to house the Office of the Chief Coroner and related forensic pathology services. |

Toronto Western Hospital – Krembil Discovery Centre |
|
Stantec Architecture is designing this 325,000 sf neuroscience research facility project on the Toronto Western campus of the University Health Network.
This project involves 170,000 sf of research laboratories as well as outpatient rehabilitation treatment floors associated and connected to the Hospital. Five and a half floors of dedicated research space will house state-of-the-art biomedical research facilities, and KDC will be home to some of the country’s leading medical researchers.
The KDC research areas will provide open, flexible lab environments connected to write up areas by glazed walls. Glazed spaces for interactive work are distributed within the labs. Unique to the new facility is the ‘Sky Lobby’, a series of two-floor glass enclosures built into the corner of the structure designed to promote collaboration between research groups.
The nine story tower plus penthouse, designed to blend into the dense urban Toronto Western Hospital campus, also provides educational facilities that connects the broader community. From east to west, one will be able to see through the building, and enjoy views of the Toronto skyline. |
